This is because you can’t simply look at a cell and “see” autophagy in action. Trying to measure autophagy is akin to herding cats – it’s extremely difficult and currently considered unfeasible in humans – although some studies have attempted it. So, as it goes with many things in health – too much of a good thing is good for nothing. And in muscles, excessive autophagy can lead to muscle wasting and weakness, which is what we see in chronic nutrition deprivation. While autophagy does play a role in normal heart functioning, excessive autophagy in the heart has been associated with heart failure. When it comes to heart disease, it is currently unknown whether upregulated autophagy is helpful or harmful. As mentioned before, exercise induces autophagy and, in turn, helps to rebuild muscles.Īt the same time, over-activity of autophagy can be a problem as well, as it may lead to unwanted cell death, which could be a problem for some conditions. In the muscle, autophagy is important for normal muscle mass preservation and maintenance. When it comes to brain health, autophagy prevents the accumulation of damaged proteins, which may contribute to neurodegenerative diseases. In cancer, for example, inhibited autophagy may lead to tumor growth. Dysfunction of this process has been tied to many diseases including cancer, infections, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, neurodegeneration, and cardiovascular disease, just to name a few. Autophagy and Disease PreventionĪutophagy was first discovered in liver cells in the 1960s, but since then, we’ve learned that it is constantly occurring in all cells and is crucial to keeping our cells functioning optimally. It’s believed that in addition to keeping our cells protected from damaged components, autophagy provides much-needed resources to the body during starvation, which is why it occurs during fasting. These little guys swallow up junk in our cells and then bind with cellular components known as lysosomes, which release acidic enzymes to break down the cellular trash, freeing up the basic units to be reused to make new molecules or to be metabolized for energy. There are a few types of autophagy, but we’re going to talk about the main one, macro-autophagy, which involves the degradation of misfolded or aggregated proteins and damaged cell components by organelles known as autophagosomes. It doesn’t just dump cellular junk into our body’s waterways. Except unlike the US recycling process, autophagy actually works. What is Autophagy?Īutophagy is basically our cell’s recycling process. So, if you’re a longevity obsessed health junkie like I am and you want to get really nerdy with me right now and learn the truth about autophagy, let’s dig in. In the name of evidence-based practice, I would be remiss if I simply extrapolated animal data to humans and didn’t present the current state of the evidence. So, while I think and hope that my recent water fast induced autophagy, I can’t say for certain that it actually did – and neither can any of those biohacker YouTubers that make similar claims. While we know that autophagy occurs in humans and is an important process for cellular health – and we know that mild stressors like exercise, infection, and food deprivation increase its activity in mammals – we do not know how long it takes to induce autophagy during fasting or to what extent it is upregulated in response to fasting – at least not in humans. The thing is – there are only a couple of human studies that actually attempt to measure autophagy in live humans, and those studies are far from being definitive. They clearly haven’t read the research on autophagy. If you’ve ever heard someone say intermittent fasting induces autophagy and cell regeneration, call BS. If you’re thinking “autopha -omg- I’m bored already,” feel free to check out another video – I won’t be offended. So today, we’re talking about the truth about autophagy. So when I went to share the info with you guys about my fast and cite my references, I realized that what I thought I knew about autophagy wasn’t based on facts at all but a lot of speculation based on animal studies. The problem was, I didn’t look into the research ahead of time. I’ll explain that more in a bit – a lot more. If you saw my last video, then you know that I recently did a 3-day water fast with the hopes of inducing autophagy – a highly hyped up cellular process that is reported to stave off disease.

THE GOLDEN RATIO & THE FIBONACCI SEQUENCE The GOLDEN RATIO was described in detail by Indian mathematicians around the 6th century AD and introduced to the West in 1202 by Leonardo Fibonacci of Pisa, the same guy that brought us the Arabic decimal system to substitute for the awkward Roman one that was used at the time. Humans have known about the GOLDEN RATIO for at least 4,000 years, some say even longer! The latest research shows that it was used in the design of hieroglyphics found on tomb walls, and also in the construction of the Egyptian pyramids and other ancient structures throughout the world. You can say it is a kind of built-in numbering system to the cosmos, and this is the reason it is often called "nature's secret code ”. One of the most famous formulas in mathematics it can be found practically everywhere including nature, geometry, the human body, and the solar system. The GOLDEN RATIO of 1.618 has been called many names throughout history: Golden Section, Golden Mean, the Magic Ratio, Divine Proportion. THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE GOLDEN SPIRAL & THE GOLDEN RATIO The Golden Spiral is based on a concept called the GOLDEN RATIO that has been shaping our understanding of balance and proportion throughout millennia. We’ll share later in this post how you can wear this sacred, secret code to the universe, so you too can access its magical properties! For centuries, this knowledge was considered sacred, a way of understanding the deeper beauty and spirituality in life. Throughout the ages a spiral has represented infinite expansion, symbolizing the expansion of nature and the universe, reflecting the magical inter-connectedness of our micro- and macro- cosmos. What is this ancient symbol of beauty, perfection and proportion? It’s the sacred form of the spiral. Its familiar shape can be recognized in our own DNA, fingerprints, flowers, trees, shells, and at a universal level, in hurricanes and galaxies. Mystics and scientists alike have been fascinated for centuries with a sacred form that’s found in nearly all living things - humans, plants and animals. Bringing them together can help us to define Bach’s own highly original expressive structure.Ĥ In the 1989 booklet, the Bach scholar Christoph Wolff sets out the constructional scheme of the libretto of Christian Friedrich Henrici (named Picander) for Bach’s St Matthew Passion. For instance, the booklet (1989) that accompanies the 1988 Archiv recording, offers two competing dispositional schemes. Relevant observations and interpretations have found their way into accompanying material for recordings of the Passion. The profound effect of the Passion is rightly attributed to the powerful alternation between chorales, recitatives and arias, on the one hand, and the biblical narrative, declaimed in the Evangelist’s recitatives and brought to life in real time by the crowd in the turba choruses, on the other.ģ Bach’s overall structuring of the St Matthew Passion has frequently been the subject of scholarly scrutiny. The chorales and recitatives with arias bear aloft the entire architecture of the work. To this dual-perspective biblical narrative Bach adds his own ‘two-choir Passion’ counterpart, implementing once again the structural principle of doubling: he constructs a sequence of chorales and recitatives with arias, giving expression to the collective and individual dismay of the believers. Following the traditional practice as observed in his St John Passion, in the St Matthew Passion Bach has the Gospel text alternately declaimed by the tenor Evangelist and enacted by the choir. Finally, as music to be integrated into the Good Friday church service the Passion as a whole is constructed in two parts, to precede and to follow the one-hour sermon.Ģ There is a long tradition of dual perspective in musical representations of the Bible narratives of the Passion, reaching back ultimately to the presentation of biblical scenes with allotted roles in medieval liturgy. In the version of the Passion as performed in 17, the two orchestras were supported by a single continuo group yet for utmost consistency in structural doubling, the version documented in the fair-copy score furnished two continuo groups as well. The instrumental group leader in each of the two orchestras is responsible for the obbligato accompaniment to arias sung by soloists of the respective choirs. Assigned to the two choirs are two string and woodwind orchestras. Opposite the Christ singer, the tenor soloist in the second choir, as Evangelist, declaims the Gospel narrative, and the Passion’s tenor arias are in consequence sung by the tenor soloist in the first choir. Bass arias are therefore sung from the second choir. The bass soloist of the first choir is charged with singing the part of Christ. The fair copy of the score, dating from 1736, allots the soprano and alto arias alternately to Choir I and Choir II. We know that each of the two choirs he deployed had its own soloists, following the practice of Leipzig church music. From this, Bach derived a comprehensive principle of doubling in musical composition. The two choirs of the St Matthew Passion have their roots in the traditions of antiphonal psalmody, handed down over centuries. 1 In his obituary of Johann Sebastian Bach written in the year 1754, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach ascribes to his father five Passions, ‘including one with two choirs’. Some of zone records use 3 or 4 letter abbreviations that are tied to physical time zones, others use numeric UTC offsets. To convert CST to PST, you have to subtract two hours. Time zone abbreviations for both Standard Time and Daylight Saving Time are shown exactly as they appear in the database. Central Standard Time (CST) is 2 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time (PST). The UTC offsets are based on the current or upcoming database rules. For zones in which Daylight Saving is not observed, the DST offset shown in this table is a simple duplication of the STD offset.
